How to focus and achieve what you want

You must make an acceptance that mistakes can happen, they are, in fact, sometimes the only opportunity for learning something truly new and making progress.

Achieve the skills you want to learn

A method that can help you focus and achieve.

Today’s question, as posed in the title, is one I’ve been reflecting on. Here’s my answer on how I focus and achieve my goals.

There are countless skills worth learning over time, but I’ve found Warren Buffet’s 5/25 Rule particularly helpful in narrowing my focus and achieving meaningful progress—both professionally and personally.

How Did I Decide What to Focus On?

I started with a personal SWOT analysis, identifying my Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. While opportunities and threats provided context, I focused primarily on my strengths and weaknesses. I asked myself:

“If I want to develop myself personally and professionally, what am I missing?”

This reflective question led me to identify several recurring skills across both strengths and weaknesses:

  • Communication
  • CAD (Computer-Aided Design)
  • Programming
  • Typing

While CAD and Programming were strengths, they are central to my job performance, and improving them felt essential. Communication and Typing complemented each other well; enhanced typing skills directly supported my blog writing and media work. Typing faster also meant I could capture thoughts and ideas before they slipped away.

Applying the 5/25 Rule

The 5/25 Rule helped me refine my focus. From a long list of skills, I prioritised the ones I considered most impactful and committed fully to them. As a result, I’ve successfully learned:

  • Juggling (for fun and mental agility)
  • A second language (Communication)
  • Speed typing
  • Advanced CAD techniques
  • VBA (Visual Basic for Applications)

This method allowed me to filter out distractions (the noise) and focus on skills that genuinely mattered.

Focus and achieve

By applying the 5/25 Rule and conducting a personal SWOT analysis, you can pinpoint the skills and goals that align with your growth. It’s a powerful way to ensure you’re investing your time and energy wisely.

I hope you find this approach as beneficial as I have over the years!
